Michael is an experienced litigator with a practice focused on civil and commercial litigation, construction law, and regulatory matters. He has appeared before all levels of the Alberta courts, including the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King's Bench of Alberta, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. He has also appeared before the Alberta Securities Commission in regulatory proceedings and has acted in adjudication matters under the Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act. Michael brings a practical, results-oriented approach to dispute resolution and is skilled in all phases of litigation, from pre-trial strategy and interlocutory applications through to trial and appeal. Throughout his career, he has developed a strong track record of advocacy across a broad range of civil and commercial matters, resulting in a significant number of reported trial and interlocutory application decisions issued by the Alberta courts and regulatory tribunals. His cases span diverse areas of law, including commercial disputes, securities regulation, construction litigation, and corporate and shareholder matters. In addition to his litigation practice, Michael represents a broad range of stakeholders in the construction industry, including owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, and design professionals. He has extensive experience negotiating, drafting, and reviewing various forms of construction contracts, including engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, CCDC standard form contracts, ACA contracts, RAIC contracts, and other bespoke contracts and subcontracts tailored to the specific needs of his clients. His construction law practice encompasses a wide variety of project fields, including oil and gas and other petrochemical projects, highways and roadways, pipelines, tunnelling, industrial and commercial complexes, and multifamily residential complexes, including condominium developments.
